I would not recommend using wax since it is difficult to remove completely and will prevent a more permanent filler (like superglue) from adhering to the wood. Superglue remains slightly flexible, even after it dries and is easy to remove with a solvent like acetone. A repairman I know (who does excellent crack repair) told me that because of this flexibility, superglue won't cause a problem for the wood, even if the crack starts to close -- of course I imagine that for the widest cracks this may not be the case.
A well repaired crack does not affect the playability of the horn, although it will probably affect the resale value.
