Thanks to all for your views. Basically, I'm always up for learning a new instrument, at least in some capacity; but my interests outside the clarinet have been towards the flute and the piano, neither of which I have any experience.
Dutchy, I understand what you are saying because I did have a clarinet from what looks like the 30s or 40s reconditioned, and while I'm happy with the sound, the keys still need tweaking and I doubt they will ever be as smooth or playable as a top brand modern clarinet (for sure). And yeah, I'd be worried about the obsolete key system, especially as I'd have no real way of telling! No, I certainly would not be looking to resell at a profit, I know that's not going to happen (unless of course, it was some incredible rare, desired make :-))
It looks to me like a wooden instrument (the cork looks clean and hardly used, doesn't look like new cork). I haven't asked the shop owners to look at it closely to avoid the embrassing 'no sorry' moment. There is a makers name, but I can't see it from the distance. If anyone would be kind enough just to give me some of the well-known names in the oboe world, I would appreciate it.
If it's still there Monday morning, I'll get up the courage to ask for a close look. Will report back :-).
Thanks again,
Elizabeth
