Hi Sheila,
Personally, I would recommend a Yamaha. The model with the Philadelphia D key is probably the Custom model, the highest one. Basically, that Key allows the High D (above the staff) speak far easier (believe me, I used to have tons of problems with that note...the Philadelphia D key has done wonders). The Yamahas are great instruments because in general they are of far more consistent quality than Lorees and they have a better ability to make any reed sound good. If you have a really amazing Loree and the perfect reed, you may (repeat...'may') be able to get a better sound, but the Yamaha will make most reeds sound a lot better and gives you a really dark sound. I tried a lot of Lorees as well as a Buffet Greenline when I was shopping for an oboe this fall and I found the Yamaha to be far more comfortable as well as sounding better. I can't speak for other models other than the Custom (the highest one) but I can tell you that I absolutely love my Yamaha and my teacher Jim Mason plays one (so does Dick Woodhams, professor of oboe at Curtis!) and they are great instruments. As far ast he Rigoutat goes, I have no clue what to expect. My suggestion to you would be to get somewhere (hopefully a knowledgeable teacher) where you can get relatively consistent, good-quality reeds and bring one of them to the store and try them. Every instrument is different and you just have to feel which one 'fits' you the best. Good luck! And let me know how the shopping goes
P.S. Oboe shopping is a lot of fun! And don't do what my friend did and pick an instrument that's not right for you and sell it a year later...no fun.
