I've seen those mpcs advertised from time to time -- not sure they're still made, but they're still around.
My understanding is that they were targeted at doublers -- people who, say, play musicals (where there is often a "reed" score that requires the same musician to play, say, clarinet, sax, and oboe).
I also understand that they don't sound very good -- otherwise you can bet that every clarinetist would have one, and would double on the oboe!
