I made one about 10 years back and it worked fairly well, though it did have a much thicker tone (not as bright) in comparison to a double reed, and was murder on the chops as the embouchure was different - neither an oboe or a soprano sax embouchure.
But put it this way, if a successful version was to be marketed and used by prominent players, they'd be moe widely accepted and would mean cheaper reeds and far less reed trouble which is welcome in many players' books.
