I just now ran across a "single reed mouthpiece for the oboe" for sale, and I'm, like, "Huh?" I didn't know you could do that.
It's a weird-lookin' little mini-clarinet mouthpiece and ligature, with what looks like a clarinet reed.
And...the $64,000 question: why would you want to? Wouldn't it just sound like a sort of hybrid clarinet? The clarinet has a cylindrical bore, and the oboe has a conical bore, so I'd guess that the sound of a conical bore woodwind played with a single reed would be sorta halfway in between, neither fish nor fowl nor good red herring. The sound can't be anything special or else they'd be more popular, I figure.
