I haven't actually done a whole bunch of playing on the EH, but I do know that Loree, Howarth, Marigaux and Rigoutat (the professional models) do well. If you are deciding to go ahead and buy an english horn I would suggest first acquiring one or two, new, decent bocals. Mark Chudnow woodwinds, and Dallas Bocal company apparently have had good reviews.
The bocal can really make or break the english horn - if the bocal is bad, even the best loree english horn will be useless. If you can even get to the shop where you are purchasing the EH from, you might be able to try, without buying, several of their bocals with the exact EH you are buying.
