I'm right at the edge of my knowledge banks here (and possibly going off into the deep end), but it seems to me I have seen some instruments around that were termed "sax oboes," thus called because they had the roller keys like saxophones instead of the pinkie key clusters like the Boehm clarinets and Conservatoire oboes.
Could this be what you are looking at?
If you want it, get it. If it plays, all the better.
The oboe is a difficult instrument for a doubler, though. It's not something I'd generally think about picking up and noodling around on. Getting that "melancholy" sound takes work. Without the work, it's more likely to sound like a dying duck. But if you don't care, I sure don't! Do what you want!
