What a beautifully drawn graphic! How in the world did you do that, and get it to post?
I am geometrically challenged (never could do those IQ tests where they turn the figure different ways and ask which one is the same), and I have to admit I don't understand this schematic.
I would have thought that the interior diameter of the staple where it contacts the oboe would be smaller, not larger, than the interior diameter of the instrument. In this schematic, it appears to be the opposite.
The reed receiver in my oboes (Covey, Loree) appears to have an opening that is just about the same size, in diameter, as the diameter of the metal staple end, which would = a pretty smooth air transition into the instrument. The cork may be larger, but the metal is about the same size, I believe. My staples are usually L. Pisoni -- my favorite -- or Sierra (a little snug).
Perhaps others are different? How much discrepancy in diameter between the two openings would there need to be in order to disrupt the airflow to any significant extent?
