This is quite an interesting topic. I like Wrowand's idea for measurment of the opening..
I think the person who has done a lot of work on openings, type of materials (ie gold or silver staples) etc. is actually Rigoutat... Do you know about their "turbo" head ( as some people call it) where there is no Metal reed Cup, but rather just straight wood. This is somethign that Indemuhle used. Also Fosatti in their 20th anniversary oboe (released this year) did a simialr thing with no Reed Cup.
I think this is an attempt to change the size of the opening into the oboe and also make less resistance from reed vibration to oboe, like the Chudnow staple tries to do with no cork dampening.
Another experiement would be to check the tuning or response of a reed on a staple, like klopfner, then do a bit of heart surgery and remove the cane and replace the staple to something like pisoni etc. and check the response difference.. just an idea....
I also like to check what the difference is by putting a staple into the oboe (just the staple, not a bound on reed) and looking down the bore. It is interesting to see how much of the end of the reed cup you can see with various brands.
