Weren't the Klopfer tubes, much like the Loree DM tubes designed for the larger bore, German style oboes, like Kreul and Loree DM's? You can- I have been told play Loree DM oboes with French tubes but you can't play the DM tubes on the French oboe.
I wonder if what you are speaking about here helps to contribute to the darker, almost free-flowing (so to speak) sound of someone like Lothar Koch-who played Kreul oboes, with Klopfer tubes I would suspect.
