Yeah, my current teacher is strongly in the "breath stop" camp, and in particular, she doesn't like much of what Lady Barbirolli (the aforementioned E.R.) has to say. (I've never even brought up Rothwell with her, but she keeps bringing it up with me -- warning me off.)
Which may go to show that there is more than one way to skin a cat . . . and, that what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger.
I read an article on the IDRS site by Alan Vogel, describing how he studied with three different internationally renowned teachers (all this on a very, very high level -- postdoc, it seems to me), and each was insistent that he relearn his embouchure according to that teacher's technique. I guess he skinned all three cats.
I've heard the same thing about organists. A young friend of mine, who was a prize-winning organ prodigy, was told to expect her new teacher to utterly dismantle her technique and make her start over. And no, it didn't kill her, and it did make her stronger.
As for me, I'm desperate. I'll try anything.
