Just one quick addition....

The lips don't make the reed vibrate: the air passing through the reed makes the vibration. The lips just act as a secondary force, to influence the musical line, and correct intonation.

As for starting the oboe - I would just go ahead and giv'er. If you do study oboe for a long time, there will always be things you will have to unlearn or change, because they have been overlooked...so may as well start now!

A few things to keep in mind...
-Remember that the air, not embouchure makes and controls the sound (mentioned above)
-Keep your fingers relaxed, don't grip the oboe.
-Breathe comfortably. Don't breathe too shallow (chest breathing) or too deeply, so that you feel bloated.
