... very interesting & informative thread this, comments & opinions regarding reeds & instruments affecting timbre, but seems to me there's one very important ingredient contributing to timbre not been discussed or evaluated in detail yet, and that's the player oneself
... discussing all these external factors, such as reed & instrument technical details, surely this is really all about trying to find out what's the optimum combination of reed and instrument under all conditions that works really well for each one of us individually, makes us sound good even on a bad day?
... so my comment / question is -- isn't player's own own individual timbre in the breath and air support the most vital ingredient in any oboe's overall timbre?
... i mean, if you can tell opera singers by their characteristic voices, is it really the instrument or the reed you're actually hearing, or is it the individual oboist's own characteristic sound through that current reed and that particular instrument?
... so, comments? how do we evaluate one's own playing timbre and how do we match that up most beneficially with suitable reed & instrument?
