The are some interesting articles in books i have read recently (Ledet's oboe reed styles, Light's essays for oboists, Rothwell's oboe book etc.), and timbre (which does not actually vary as much among oboists because it is the timbre of the oboe that defines what we call an oboe tone.) and generally what i like to term more as tone color then timbre is affected by how the embouchure is formed (lip pressure), how much air speed or pressure the player applies, the design of the instrument itself, the oral cavity of the player, the reed, tension in the body and etc.
I guess it has something to do with the player itself (a lot of thins in fact!), the experienced player is able to adjust to the changes in physical things such as reed and instrument. That solves the technical side of playing, but when you add up the 'personal sound' subject that has to do with everything. I want to hear more from others before i continue elaborating, since i am a relatively new bie compared to most here.
