What everybody said. I'm a 50-year-old adult, been playing for less than a year, and I'm *still* struggling with Db and left-hand Eb. What helps is practicing them very slowly and deliberately--don't try to rush through the Ab scale and shrug off the fact that you missed those notes, "oh, well, I'll get 'em next time around", because you won't. Focus on exactly what movements you need to make with your arm, hand, and fingers in order to hit those notes, and practice slowly and carefully.
Also, when my embouchure is tired, I just can't hit 'em at all, no matter how much attention I pay to my physical movements. Taking 5 minute breaks when I start having trouble making the reed sound is beneficial, I've found.
And patience. Patience, patience, patience. It'll come.
If the oboe was easy, there'd be millions of fifth-grade oboists the way there are millions of fifth-grade clarinetists. :D
Adding: He does need to learn that left-hand Eb--trying to slide your right pinky from Db to Eb just doesn't work.
