Well, on the bright side....you don't have to play!
You're in a prime seat for listening!
While I agree that some pieces are quite ridiculous, and don't really need a 2nd oboe, sometimes the 2nd oboe is absolutely crucial to the texture. If there is no E.H., the 2nd oboe fills out the mezzo-sop. range of the double reed sound.
It's easy to get envious of the principal playing all the time, but it's even easier to just sit back and relax and listen to the music. One thing though....COME IN ON TIME. That is crucial!
For the reeds - just moisten it with your mouth every so often. The idea is to not draw attention to yourself during a performance ...so no fiddling with water and reeds going in and out of the oboe. If it's a considerably long rest, or a tacet for a movement, dip the reed in water, and put it in the case. At least 30 seconds before you have to come in, get the oboe ready and remove any extra water in the reed. You should be ready to go at t-15seconds.
If the tacet movement is very quiet nearing the end, and you have play the top of the next movement, it is better to have the oboe assembled and ready to go, on your lap.
Have fun!
