Well, I have to say that the longest rest I have come across is...wait for it...

TACET!

Yep. Tacet. I absolutely hate them beyond measure, and it is very very very hard not to fall asleep whilst you're rehearsing your 'tacet' movement and the conductor won't let you leave because 'no one is to leave rehearsals'. God damnit.

Often to keep myself awake I engross myself in an interesting book, or even piss off the 1st oboist who is busy tootling away by looking over their shoulder and really OBVIOUSLY fingering their solos. Funny one.
