I would like to thank everybody for the great advice and tips. We've been driving around in the north Dallas area. Luckily we were able to locate a Yamaha 841T and a Fox 400 at two different stores. The associates at both stores were very nice and accommodating and let us try out the instruments in their practice room. According to my son, the Yamaha definitely feels well made, definitely a nice oboe, easy to play and less resistant. However, the sound seems to lack a bit of depth (not sure if that's the right word). It still sounds great, but just not as great as a fine example of Loree. His teacher plays a Loree. On the other hand, the Fox 400 feels a bit more resistant, but produces nice and warm sound. Despite being a store display model, despite some dirt in bore that couldn't be completely swabbed out, it still sounded great. My son had rented a Fox 400 before he went to college. He is already familiar with the key mechanisms. That may have helped. Anyway, we decided to set the Fox 400 as a our baseline. If we can find anything better than the Fox 400, we will buy it. If not, we probably will go with the Fox 400.

We haven't talked to the Howarth dealer yet. From what Oboe Craig mentioned, and from what I read on the internet, it seems that Howarth makes plastic upper joint for every model. That may be a very interesting choice for us. We had some wild temperature swings in the past winter. We had a few days of 60-70F, followed by sudden drop to 30F. Since he has a long walk from his dorm to the practice building, the risk of cracking is a concern for us. It seems that a professional oboe with plastic top joint would be a good choice for us. My son is still very interested in a Loree. I guess I will have to call around to find out if anyone has one we can try. I called Midwest before. All their new Lorees are out on trials. I will definitely give oboe fairy a call and find out what she has in stock.

Again, many thanks to everybody! Appreciate all your info and advice!

Jake
