Hi Donna!
Welcome to the board. And congratulations on your new oboe.
I was using the forked F a lot because my regular Fs were sharp. Then I got my oboe adjusted, and now the regular (right and left) Fs are better than the forked F. It takes constant thinking to break the habit of using the forked fingering, especially on passages that I have already learned using it.
Maybe if you would start using the left F (where appropriate) while learning something new, rather than on something you already have under your fingers, it would be easier to establish the new habit.
You will get used to it -- it just takes time, and the self-discipline to do it.
If you find a teacher, he or she will probably "help" you remember to use it -- like, demand that you use it.
Are there any colleges near where you live that have music programs? I would check with them for a possible teacher. If you have a community band in your area, there might be someone in the band who could help you.
Also, check here http://www.oboeinsight.com for a list of teachers in various areas. Go to the page on instructors, and use the word "Michigan" in your "Find in Top Window" button -- I found Northern Michigan U., Central Michigan U., Western Michigan U., and a lot of others. If there's nobody close enough, just email or call the one closest to you, and see if they know of anyone in your area.
Good luck!
Susan
