Re: When is everybody using Left F?

I am using the low B to flatten my G. I meant that the right hand Ab would be handy for me to play an Ab preceding or following the G.

I have tried changing the support for the note to get it in tune, but that is not possible at faster speeds.

I have noticed (through live performances and videos) that many players (mostly French) use the low B for their top space G (and some of them for the top line F# as well). Those players include Marucie Bourgue, Jacques Tys, David Walter, Francois Leleux, Dudu Carmel ... I don't think Heinz Holliger does that though. I have a feeling that it has something to do with the scrape as well (I am using European short scrapes by the way).

I know players of baroque, classical and Viennese oboes sometimes add their r.h. ring finger to the top space G to stabilize it. I wouldn't do it on a ocnservatory system oboe though -- the closing of the F# vent as a result would affect the tone colour and pitch too much, in my opinion (I should try that first perhaps).
