If you are still taking lessons, ask your teacher for a quick sharpening demonstration. Not sure if you have done that already. That helped me.

Please take my advice with a grain of salt - this is a hobby and I am no professional. It seems my knives come out sharper when using oil but I use a fine grit stone not diamond stones. Plus maintain the same angle for the entire blade as mentioned in earlier posts. I use a heavy duty beveled knife (jointer blades, pack of 3) that is a no-brainer to sharpen for removing bark and roughing out the tip area and save the double hollow ground for finishing work. I have an Albion knife too. It is pickier to sharpen but gets REALLY sharp. Saving it for fine work makes the edge last longer.
