I have always been "playing the notes", rarely relying on/expecting the instrument and reed to "give me the notes". My body does not always react/feel the same, neither my state of mine stays the same, neither the atmospheric conditions stay the same. Oboe players do share sort of similar predicament with string players. We do make the notes and fit them to music we play, less so than the string players but more so than most other wind players.
In addition, the music demands each note slightly different pitch depending on the key, mode (major or minor, or penta tone or...) and harmonic circumstance. I am not sure if I want the reed and instrument to give me fixed frequency like keyboard instrument... that would be sort of boring prospect.
I do admire your ability to make the reed to give you good pitch for the first two octaves on your particular instrument. I hope your impression on your reed performance is real, not imagined. Humans do have ability to imagine things so well that it is difficult to tell somethings are real or imagined at times.
