Coop,
I read this last night, and I have the two reeds at my desk and are being played as I write this.
The Brannon X (you know a wide shape) seems be doing all right. The high register is coming out without pressing, though it could probably be better, and maybe could do from extending the back.
The Sansom +3 (I still think it's a wide shape) seems to need work. I wound up taking more from the the tip of this reed, because the upper register was going sharp, and I was experimenting with the center line ("spine") in the blend as it effects the pitch of the upper register. I wonder if it was because the back of my reed wasn't extended far enough, and maybe I was pressing. David Weber's book suggests 4 mm from the wrap is where to start the scrape, and I was above that. I have extended the back of this reed, and it seems to help. I fear I may have taken too much from the blend, it's a bit pitchy, so will have to retry with a new reed after experimenting with these more. I like the Sansom +3 because it seems to respond well, even after sitting for some time. This is a major concern for me.
Any additional information on how the back relates to the upper register (or any other aspects of reed performance) is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Drew S.
