John,
I had the good fortune to attend Mack Oboe camp one summer before my senior year in oboe studies at the conservatory.
He made 100s if not 1000s of valuable points all over the oboe map and while encouraging us to seek better and better understanding of reeds also made the point we have to play on what we have.
Based on the Woodhams vid, I think he is really making that same point.
Learn to define a range of useful and try to stay within that range.
I've certainly never made anything close to a perfect reed, but I have cases full of useful ones.
Some I like better for performing in certain acoustical settings and some I prefer for recording.
It is a pretty wide continuum once you factor in room anamolies, weather , etc.
Perfect reed....? I once believed in Santa Claus. I really did....
At least we gain from the spirit of the efforts.
