I did appreciate the 20 hours per week he puts in for reeds! It puts things in perspective. I just scraped 7 reeds 2 good possibilities .... they all play BUT I need a reed to make beautiful music.
Well maybe tomorrow ... the Oboe Reed Angels will be kind to me!

Craig,
I have exactly the same feelings as Kevin Moore at the end (below the video) inre John Mack. I still can't get over his untimely passing. He was like the father I never had. The greatest of the great. Thanks for sharing.

Two choices:
One - Find a way to be happy with those dozen or so decent reeds you already have.
Two - Be unsatisfied and keep looking for that "perfect" reed.
I have concluded that the "perfect" reed is in my head, not in this world, ... And I chose one. And found happiness with those decent reeds, some make things easier for me in one way or another. Some of the best reeds I ever had were always in the past.
Good luck with you!

If I have to settle .... no choice -- down to my last wonderful reed I will.
But I choose not to settle ........... I hate when a reed does not enhance my playing experience.
I want my reeds to BEHAVE PERIOD!
So back to the gouge curve, shaper tip, cane selection, staple opening, tie length, etc.... etc....etc.....
SO scrape away I will ........ (So far no nervous breakdowns).

John,
I had the good fortune to attend Mack Oboe camp one summer before my senior year in oboe studies at the conservatory.
He made 100s if not 1000s of valuable points all over the oboe map and while encouraging us to seek better and better understanding of reeds also made the point we have to play on what we have.
Based on the Woodhams vid, I think he is really making that same point.
Learn to define a range of useful and try to stay within that range.
I've certainly never made anything close to a perfect reed, but I have cases full of useful ones.
Some I like better for performing in certain acoustical settings and some I prefer for recording.
It is a pretty wide continuum once you factor in room anamolies, weather , etc.
Perfect reed....? I once believed in Santa Claus. I really did....
At least we gain from the spirit of the efforts.
