I use an RDG gouger with 11 bed, and it works fine for cane from 10.0 - 11.0
The cane sources I use offer 10. - 10.5 and 10.5 - 11 mm diameters.
Using that and a standard American center gouge of .6 mm with a Brannon X gives me good results here in Colorado at a mile high. (Above sea level).
THe principal oboist in the CO Symphony uses a much smaller bed which is an option from RDG.
One thing to realize about smaller beds is they cannot accommodate larger diameter canes while a larger bed can accommodate a smaller diameter, although as Bob points out, the results can be more unpredictable or inconsistent.
When you start splitting your cane before pre-gouging, be careful to find a symmetrical arc in the cane and try to maintain that. And realize most cane is not circular and is more of a rounded triangle. So you have choices to make and control over the effective diameter of the split cane.
For me, on smaller cane, I usually find the 'larger' diameter and on larger cane I go for the smaller arcs. It makes 10.0 more consistent with 11.0, aprox. at the 10.5 diameter.
