This is true, as anyone who has tried larger reeds (baroque oboe, cor anglais, bassoon) can testify. Wider shape is easier to blow, and not only because it causes smaller aperture.
Recently I bough a narrower shape in hopes to get easier high notes, the high notes got easier yes, but it takes so much more pressure to play! I was quite stunned actually. Everything - the cane, thickness, staple and scrape, remained the same and the new shape is only 0.4 mm narrower.
