Craig, thanks for the tip (no pun intended!) on diameter. I hadn't thought of that one.
I agree that young students progress faster on 'better' equipment, and I will be cautious of making reeds which seem to speak by merely breathing on them! There is a fine line between making it accessible and so they don't develop the habit of biting just to get the reed to speak, and making it so easy that they don't develop the correct technique in the first place.
I also plan to wire the student reeds (short-scrape) as there is a lot of simple adjusting that can happen without the student needing to know how to use a knife. I am hoping in time that I can teach adjustment and basic reedmaking to these students, as the system we work in (government provides free lessons, but these are in small groups and the oboes start much later than other band instruments) doesn't really allow for these important lessons to occur early on.
