Does the width of the shape influences the hardness or softness of a reed; I doubt it. More probably the pitch.

I started playing much wider reeds and as I have progressed over the years I have steadily moved to narrower reeds.

From my experience - The softness (easiness to blow) of a reed is determined by the cane and scrape and also the opening of the reed. All these attributes influence the playability of the reed.
