My wrist is wrecked from years of clarinet playing. When I started learning the oboe, things worsened. What saved me is a device called a "Fhred". Google it. It is a basically a stick that cleverly attaches to your oboe and takes some of the weight off. You still can move freely. I have found that it also allows me to have a better hand position and move my fingers faster.

I am seeing more and more prominent clarinetists using neck straps (neck straps work better for clarinet- not for oboes) to preserve their wrists. I wish I took a more preventative approach years ago.

Good Luck and give the Fhred device a try.
