Plastic Bundys are a lot better than some student level wooden oboes (and better than wooden Bundy oboes) to begin on and far better than any of the Chinese oboes that you see loads of listed on eBay and elsewhere. I think plastic Bundys have got a much better tone than the student Buffets and the keywork is more comfortable.
I've got a plastic Signet Soloist which is the top model oboe offered by Selmer (USA) which is basically a Bundy but with far more keywork (full Gillet conservatoire system, but I've made various keywork modifications to bring it up to UK spec). That does me very well as a back-up, travel and outdoor oboe for those occasions where I'd never risk playing my kingwood one and I've used it for concerts when my wooden one was out of action.
Pretty much every wooden-bodied Bundy oboe I've seen had warped joints making the whole instrument banana-shaped, so I'd advise against getting a wooden one, whereas the plastic bodied ones are perfectly straight and you also don't have the worry of them cracking.
