Well, you already know this, but the problem with ebay is, when you buy something, you're stuck. So if the instrument is in disrepair, or not a good fit, it's money lost. Considering your situation and aspirations with music, Selmer should be ok for you. I think Yamaha is better but more expensive. Since you'll probably only play on your own and for your own enjoyment, the tuning of the instrument and tone probably are not a major concern. This being the case, maybe synthetic reeds would cut down on costs. I've tried synthetic reeds on sax, definitely tinny and a bit harsher on the ear, but they play (I don't recommend them, just tried them out of curiosity). As far as sythetics, I don't believe you'll be able to alter them, so the shape they come is the shape you have to play. Also, as with all woodwind instruments, buying used (and even new) there is a considerable chance the instrument will leak, making it difficult to play.
