I don't use any additional equipment to hold the reed. I don't have just one "position" either (see previous posts).
Plaque in the reed (never scrape without it)
Index finger under the top of the reed/plaque, directly beneath where I am scraping. Not the fingertip, but the back area of the pad of the end joint
second joint of Middle finger curled under the thread/cork
fourth and fifth fingers curled around the cork
thumb on top of the thread, in line with the reed, and used as a fulcrum for the knife to rock against.
I know some people recommend using your mandrel while scraping, but I like being able to crow and scrape and crow and scrape. Get used to scraping without any supports and you'll never look back, believe me.
