CJ wright is quite correct.."it's not the Oboe but the player"..I am sure we can all pretty much produce "our sound" on any Oboe..yes there will be slight differences in timbre but it'll still sound like "You"..

Not quite sure who CJ Wright is refering to as having Moved from a Royal to a Howarth XL as a few female players names have been bandied around.. and I am very bemused at JRC's comment "Caramel chocolate covered death fish" I have no idea what that refers to or what is meant by it..Am I missing something or am I even more dense than I realise..Equally not certain what the homogenous sound of the Julliard school sounds like but surely it can't be that dictatorial as the individual player will influence the final sound..or can it.. It sounds slightly robotic if thats the case, this would simply not happen here in the UK, there is as wide a variety of sound as is possible..I know that I have read here a lot of talk about the Cleveland sound versus the Philadelphia sound (again I have no idea what that refers to) but surely the individual sound would be preferable.

In Europe it seems we are blessed with a wide variety of sound..The French make a terribly sweet sound (big Rigoutat and Marigaux players), the Germans are darker and the English lyrical..I'd settle for any of the three. I have enjoyed the American players I have heard but in reality thats a small number however they are the reportedly the best in the USA so they bring a lot more to the table than just a sound, they bring a highly skilled and polished performance, phrasing, quality and eveness of tone throughout the range hence their status as the USA's top Oboists so added to their tone it all makes up for a pleasing experience..

I feel its important to find your own voice which can be influenced of course by the "greats" but ultimately its up to the the players ear..Listen and learn seems to work..try different approaches, reeds, scrapes, even Oboes.. I think in the end though it will come down to you the individual how you sound..
