Hi all,
I have this problem with the octave F on my new Moennig (Albrecht Mayer model 150). I wonder if you can help me with this puzzle...
I have found the F a bit too low since buying the instrument, and I asked Mr. Ludwig Frank (from whom I bought it) to raise the F slightly. Since that time, I have found it to be very unstable. I've tried both of my gouges, all 5 of my shapes, and 3-4 different staples. Sometimes, though I can't see any pattern with the shapes or gouges, I have no F problem with a new reed. On the second day, though, it presents again.
Mr. Frank doesn't have any problem playing a stable F on my instrument with his German reeds.
It's not the adjustments or a dirty F rod. I take much less out of the back of my reeds than most who use the American scrape. I also have tried making shorter tips on my reeds. Mr. Frank gave me a second bell to try. No difference. He gave me an identical new Moennig to try. Same problem. However, when I tried a Frank oboe -- which has a *regular* F resonance key on the left side of the instrument -- I had no problem with any of the reeds I had along that day.
The only reeds that (almost) never gave me a problem with the F are from some gouged and shaped Marigaux cane which I purchased on a whim. It's quite a flared shape, the most flared I've seen, and so of course is rather wide at the top. I don't think this is the key, though, as the shape I've had a little less trouble with than most is my old -1N, which is among my narrowest.
So the clear solution is to have this additional F resonance key added to my instrument, yes? Mr. Frank is happy to do this for me, but of course I've wanted to explore all options before having the instrument altered. I'm at the end of my rope, though, and have a solo recital coming up in a few weeks. Any last-ditch ideas?
Many thanks in advance.
