Unfortunately Politics affects us all. Arts in particular are vulnerable - since the market model for many artistic endeavors does not work. We have so many talented musicians (as well as athletes); however, our society is a winner take all culture and one that is very mercantile.
The Arts need the support of our citizens - it is a social good. Some activities cannot progress and maintain themselves on a market economy model and need the support of an enlightened government and populace.
Thank goodness for the quality public schools, relatively free universities that were available to me as a unsophisticated barely blue collar working class kid from Brooklyn.
Where else would I have been introduced to the Oboe - and thank goodness for a free city university. And I appreciate the Doctorate from Columbia University (with the help of a Federal Grant).
I have given back ten fold in service to my community.
