I would reinforce the last post regarding getting a teacher. Self taught oboists can run into lots of frustration......many times problems are not what you think they are. This is very apparent on the board when people write in with a problem. It's like getting medical advice over the phone.....
At the very least research the repair people in your area. Don't be satisfied with someone telling you the pads should be OK for a year or so! The oboe is complex machinery....the keys have to work together in many different combinations....It is far more complicated than a sax, flute for that matter. Find out where the professional oboists take there instruments to be repaired.. Many times the professional oboist can adjust your oboe better than a general repairman that repairs brass and woodwinds.
I'm not downplaying the board as there is great information to be gained here.(discounting mine) ......... Even with every pad in perfect condition on the oboe....if the instrument is out of adjustment ie adjustment screws.....the instrument won't play.
