I asked Landwell about the student knives, and they said that they were only for local students. Everyone else pays full price.
I keep a *really* sharp edge on my Vitry, using the fine side of a Carborundum stone, a Hard Arkansas stone and a razor strop. I've had the knife for 40 years, so maybe the steel was better then.
Gonzalo Ruiz, who's a reedmaking wizard, uses a medium-soft steel knife, about the same as my Vitry. He sharpens it every five minutes, using one swipe on the side of the blade away from his thumb, and then one swipe on the other side, starting flat and rotating the blade up to curve the cutting edge. It takes him about 15 seconds.
Even a Landwell or Jende costs less than a date with dinner and a movie, and you have it for the rest of your life. Spend the money already!

I disagree about equipment quality. A pro can probably make a reed with a butter knife, but a cheapo knife is impossibly frustrating for a beginner, who needs to have things just right.
