Question to European scrape reed makers:
Not once in my life did I ever make a good English Horn reed: oboe and d'amore, no problem, but E.H., I just can't get a coarse crow! That is, it will crow correctly for a few seconds, then whiz down to a faint single note (the upper octave of the so-called "3-octave crow").
I don't actually own an EH to play with, but I still make the reeds for experimentation. What I expect (as with oboe and d'amore reeds) is a consistent 3 octave crow: a very harsh sound that will not disappear after playing for a few minutes. Lovers of super-soft reeds might disagree with me, but with my very loud voice, that's what I need to take my air pressure and volume.
Any comments, observations, experience or anecdotes are appreciated!
p.s.: I'm not great with wire, might this be why?
