hm, reed knife on extra utility shelf on music stand ... so yeah, maybe i'm a noid but hey, let's revisit some of our practices
... wondering if, considering the changing times and domestic security issues, whether double reeders need to seriously rethink the appropriate-ness of having this very sharp reed knife out in public places?
Having a reed knife out handy on a music stand for the oboist's reed-fixing convenience is also (slim-chance) opportunity waiting for any crazy person to seize it ... crazy could mean just a temporarily insane jealous lover nowadays, not to mention those 'other' more seriously crazies
Maybe all double reeders ought to discourage the practice of cutting or adjusting reeds anywhere in public? (Hey, reed-making can return to being something of a mystery again ...)
Reed knives aren't usually sold with a sturdy mandatory knife sheath and those that do have something a cover are a joke, knife slices through them in no time.
... wouldn't it be "more pro" to make reeds in the privacy of home (or get from experienced reed makers in locale) and so have a good selection of several reeds already well blown-in from previous home practice, rather than just have one single playing reed with its nerve-wracking fatal damage consequences?
No doubt there's always an exceptional emergency situation where a new reed must be cut, or scraped to adjust it for what-ever, but if we have a larger selection of reeds with us, one of which must surely be more playable than the others, that way we wouldn't ever have a reed knife out in public on any music stand?
