Well, I am familiar with the concept of "transposing instruments", since my daughter plays the clarinet, and it was my great privilege (!) to struggle through the piano accompaniment for one of her "contest" pieces. My head nearly exploded from the way she was playing in an entirely different key from me, ("now, when YOU'RE playing a Bb, it's actually sounding like a C...or is it the other way around??"), so I finally had to just ignore the whole issue and put my head down and just play.
But I thought that playing a non-transposing instrument like the oboe meant that I could sail along my merry way, playing what was written and having it come out like it was written, and the issue of "you're playing Bb but it's really C" would be "over there" somewhere for the clarinets to deal with, "not my problem". So apparently--unfortunately--it IS going to be my problem, as it means that sometimes I'm going to have to play in the key of Ab, and am going to have to master the Evil Twins, Db and Alternate Eb.
