I'm a simplistic minimalist, Robin: glad for you, Whatever works!!
I'm not sure if it's my amateur standing or a lack of a technical mind-set, but I tend to use what's at hand and am happy that I can get my reeds to play!
(an aside: since I am not particular, I tend to not throw reeds away, but keep whittling at them and if they don't 'come around', they're practice reeds or set aside to try at a later date/season. I know this is not professional behavior, but I've a limited income. I tend to buy cane and staples when they're on sale! And sometimes I get a surprise: an Unplayable reed suddently comes to life. I couldn't explain how, though: too technical for me.)
