46 mm glotin silver or brass staples, Brannon- X shape, .60 mm center gouge using 10.5 - 11 diameter cane, finished length from 68 mm to 70 mm, mostly 68.5.
Rarely, I go slightly shorter than 68 mm, usually the result of really having to coax a reed out of the cane, lots of cane removed, rails gone around heart, windows deep and long and scraped almost to the thread.
I detail that, because you describe things getting shorter. Sometimes, a crop of cane just only plays on the extreme short end for me. Still, they are sometimes really good reeds with a big and well-centered sound.
I do an American style reed much like David Weber's photos show.
