Boy, howdy!
I'm another one of the Midwesterners who has been sweltering through this summer. It seems that we went from March to August, without stopping at April, June, or July first.
Yes, rivulets of sweat coursing over the sunscreen and eyeliner and into the eyes is pretty darned annoying. I have a lovely large linen handerkerchief (which I do keep clean) that I keep at hand while playing. At a non-airconditioned band rehearsal a couple of weeks ago, the director was sweating buckets, and, lacking a handkerchief, was lifting up his shirt to mop his face. I caught his attention, and discreetly tossed him my lovely hankie to use for the duration. Guess there'll be more oboe solos next year . . . .
I definitely have an issue with spit rattles everywhere. I have been blaming it on the air conditioning. The only cure I know is to swab at every opportunity, and swish the reed out with water every little bit. I also make sure there is no extra water in the reed when I start out, because if there is, it will assuredly find its way to my first octave key.
I still love summer, though. And in the winter, the furnace heat creates just as much problem as the air conditioning does.
We should all live in San Francisco, where it is eternally Spring.
