Hi Ashley --

One of my college music teachers always used to tell us, "You have to do the theme BEFORE you can do the variations."

So in this case, since you are just trying your hand at reed-making for the first time, I'd suggest you start with oboe thread (there are a gazillion colors available), until you really get the hang of it. Then you can experiment, if you want to.
