... any natural fiber thread (silk, linen, cotton) will last longer if it's first water-proofed by drawing it several times through beeswax
... frequent wetting and drying around the reed tightens and loosens natural fiber thread unless it's well coated first
... also water, saliva & brass tube all make a chemical brew that gradually rots down natural thread
... can get *hard * block tailor's beeswax (don't faint at the price) from fabric & sewing supplies store, the ! soft ! beeswax used for candles crumbs too quickly, can't draw thread through that
... nylon oboe thread less hassle in that way, but has its own challenges, such as stiffer generally, slippery to handle and twist-loops over itself quite readily
... if your playing reeds don't last very long anyway (several months) maybe won't need beeswax
... seems anything worthwhile doing is meticulous hard work somehow or other
