I use FF silk thread for my oboe reeds. It's not as stretchy as nylon and for a given thickness it's stronger. There are fewer color choices -- at least I haven't found as many as I have for nylon.
Any thread of reasonable thickness and strength is fine. One of my teachers bought thread from an upholstery store on big spools and then wound it onto smaller more manageable wooden spools. That's probably the most economical thing to do.
