The art of adding and using a wire is almost lost, but valuable according to a mentor of mine.
In a pinch, you COULD consider ordering 2 or 3 professionally-made reeds and study their design OR do your best to scrape the reed to imitate the sound. It sounds like cheap advice, but "imitation is the most sincere form of flattery" and I learned much from only 2 reeds (separate makers).
One I ordered from the internet was not perfect, by any means; it had a split starting at the bottom (thread end) which I dealt with summarily, BUT I still learned quite a bit from that reed.
I too find EH reeds easier to make. Since you've had such success after a handful of attempts, I would just KEEP AT IT.
