You may want to add a wire. I never use wire to support the opening of the reed. The opening should be controlled by the cane diameter, gouge and staple. The purpose of the wire is to solidify the entire reed. I feel my reeds play smoother and have more "bottom" to the sound. Give it a go and see how it works.
